Grower Survey

In 2023, GGA conducted a survey with 105 Western Australian growers to understand the use and perspectives on grain legumes in crop rotations. The results highlighted that, while grain legumes offer clear benefits like nitrogen fixation and improved soil health, challenges such as fluctuating commodity prices, limited market access, and yield variability limit their broader adoption. Notably, over half of the respondents found grain legumes unprofitable, with additional concerns about weed control and harvestability.

Despite these barriers, growers are advocating for further investment in market development, genetic advancements, and research on legumes’ nitrogen contributions. This survey underscores the importance of continued research and collaboration to optimise legume integration, supporting resilient and profitable farming systems in WA.
