Southern Dirt Incorporated
Description
Southern Dirt is an Incorporated not-for-profit agricultural research and extension group based in the south of WA. The group was formed in 2010 when a number of farmers and industry professionals, who had come to know and trust each other, decided to do something for themselves and their communities. In a climate of receding support from the Agricultural department, a real gap was emerging in the area, which put farmers at risk of falling behind the rest of the agricultural community.
Activities/Projects
Southern Dirt have a number of projects in 2023 and beyond. We are participating in the Smart Farms Water Smart Dams with three demonstrations sites within the Kojonup shire. Funding through GRDC is supporting on farm trials with Stirlings to Coast Farmers and Southern DIrt for Claying in non-wetting forest gravels and Deep sands as well as opportunities for Summer cropping.
The MLA supports Producer Demonstrations Sites which are investigating the benefits of Dual purpose Crops and Alternative Fodder for providing additional feed sources for livestock.
We also provide members with the opportunity to participate in revegetation projects through State NRM funding.
