Southern Biosecurity Group
Description
Operated from 1982 as a declared species group coordinating control of wild dogs. Under the BAM Act to be eligible for government matching funds from raising a Declared Pest Rate we transitioned to become recognised as a Recognised Biosecurity Group (RBG).
As an RBG coordination of control has extended to other declared animal and weed species.
Our vision to manage the impact of declared pest species so that they have minimal impact on the agricultural industry, landscapes and biodiversity values within the Ravensthorpe Shire.
To assist and encourage a consistent, integrated and cooperative approach to the management of declared priority pest species across all land types within the Ravensthorpe Shire.

Activities/Projects
ongoing wild dog control along with integrated fox and rabbit control. Monitoring of animal movements at 3 river corridors where the Esperance Extension of State Barrier Fence will not be constructed due to natural water courses. Data to be used to create baseline of information prior to fence construction.
Past Accomplishments
– reduced wild dog attacks on livestock, release of the RHV5 rabbit virus in the shire, reduced impact of apple Sodom in close proximity to agricultural land, biological control and herbicide treatment of cactus in a river system within the shire that is of mythological importance to local indigenous community and reducing opportunity for spread of the weed onto agricultural land.
