SPAA is a non-profit and independent member-based group formed in 2002 to promote the development and adoption of precision agriculture (PA) technologies.
The association aims to help improve the profitability and sustainability of agricultural production systems by facilitating research, extension and the adoption of PA.
PA management offers many Australian farms the potential for a quantum increase in production efficiency.
Current SPAA members include producers of grain, winegrape and horticultural crops, and livestock, as well as consultants, equipment manufacturers, contractors and researchers.
SPAA has an Australia-wide focus achieved by partnering with other organisations and supporting national grower and industry alliances.

Activities/Projects
SPAA is the lead agency on the GRDC Hands on Precision Agriculture training project, which is delivering workshops across Australia in 2021 and 2022. The workshops are designed to encourage more farmers to use PA to improve the speed and accuracy of decision making, reduce production costs and increase farm profitability.
Another recent project is the Virtual Bus Tour, completed in 2021, that provides access to case studies from 13 farmers across four regions in South Australia.

Past Accomplishments
SPAA has worked on a wide range of successful projects with groups such as the GRDC, SA Grains Industry Trust and Grain Producers Australia, and won an encouragement award at the 2016 Ag Excellence Alliance Awards.Produces Australia’s only Precision Agriculture magazine, PA News, and hosts a Precision Agriculture Symposium each year, as well as numerous PA Expos across the country.SPAA managed the GRDC PA in Practice Southern region project. This included production of PA in Practice Volume I (available free of charge online) and other publications filled with technical guides, economics and farmer case studies.Production of PA in Practice Volume II (available free of charge online), which became a text resource for those studying precision agriculture at the University of New England.SPAA has worked with Grain Producers Australia and the Tractor and Machinery Association of Australia to develop the Code of Practice for Agricultural Mobile Field Machinery with Autonomous Functions in Australia.
