Oil Mallee Association of Australia
Description
The OMA started to help meet the challenges of a fully cleared wheatbelt with a strong alliance of farmers and scientists.
We are a farmer lead grower group focussed on production and profitability of oil mallees integrated into the farming system, agroforestry, eucalyptus oil production, carbon farming, bioenergy production and biochar.
The potential for an integrated approach to replacing trees into the landscape was supported by the Commonwealth and the promise of carbon payments stimulated the uptake of over 10,000 hectares including 1000 hectares by the Kansai Electric Company of Japan.
Further work by the CRC Future farm Industries, CSIRO and others investigated new value chain technologies which demonstrated significant potential for bioenergy and profitable, sustainable land use.
The OMA seeks to encourage capacity building of members and delivery of locally relevant research and development and extension. The scaling up of the oil mallee approach requires support networks for participatory applied research and farmer to farmer technology.
