AgZero 2030
Description
AgZero2030 are a producer-led group of Western Australian farmers, and primary industries professionals and organisations who have formed a movement to promote positive responses to climate change.
Established in 2019, a working group of 14 committed members organised a ‘Creating Climate Solutions in WA Agribusiness Forum’ at UWA within 3 months of formation. There, the 60 primary industry attendees agreed to contribute to the movement. The forum attendees created three key goals which make up our mission statement to ‘share positive stories about responses to climate change from Western Australian primary industries, share climate change related information and research, and contribute to evidence-based primary industries policy responses to climate change.’
AgZero2030 Mission is to share positive stories about responses to climate change from Western Australian primary industries, share climate change related information and research, and contribute to evidence-based primary industries policy responses to climate change.
AgZero2030 acknowledges the innovation and adaptation of Western Australian primary producers in response to climate change, caused by changing climatic systems, changing ocean temperatures, changed seasonal rainfall, increasing frost and heat stress events, and increased risk of fire. We know that there are limits to business as usual adaptation strategies, and that minimising global warming increases the chances for healthy rural communities to continue providing food and fibre to people locally and overseas.
AgZero2030 accepts that renewable energy and innovative value chain technologies are required to reduce WA's contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. We'll continue to seek and embrace suitable and evidence-based opportunities for carbon capture and storage in soils and vegetation.
In 2020, AgZero2030 became a registered charity with a volunteer board being made up of farmers. Its larger working group involves 11 producers (core participants) and 4 industry representatives.
The AgZero movement interacts with a large producer audience via traditional and social media, is actively involved with producers in Farmers for Climate Action, WA Farmers and NRM groups.

Activities/Projects
National Landcare Farming project - Coordinating a farmer group on a Carbon benchmarking project, 2021. South coast NRM project partner on 'Farmers helping Farmers to maximise soil-moisture and production from Australia’s most prolonged drought (Federal Future Drought Fund).
Past Accomplishments
As a new volunteer organisation AgZero has achieved much in the areas of messaging via campaigns (#2030moves #2030reasons #2030convos), the media, submissions to government, a podcast and lobbying of producer groups (WAFarmers). 2019- hosted 'Creating Climate Solutions in WA Agribusiness' forum at UWA (60 participants). 2020 -major communication and engagement project proposal to DPIRD (pending) on sharing climate solution stories via traditional and print media. In principle support received, concept is to advance positive climate solutions across farming landscapes. This project primarily aims to engage producers, industry, the general public and government; encourage agricultural influences to advance climate solutions and build climate and carbon literacy across the industry. In 2020, AgZero cohosted a ‘Progressing climate solutions forum’ with WAFarmers at DPIRD. Several core producer participants have experience working together in carbon accounting having completed the MLA/DPIRD pilot sheep carbon accounting project in 2020 (4 members) and three members are working with their consultants in carbon accounting and carbon farming. In February 2021, AgZero submitted a proposal to the National Landcare Farming program to coordinate a Carbon benchmarking project of 10 WA farmers. This was accepted and has started.
