In 2020-2021, AgriFutures Australia engaged Tenacious Ventures to conduct a horizon-scanning study to identify major trends that would impact the future of Australia’s agriculture industry in the coming decade. The result of this study was the Future Forces report, which detailed five major forces shaping the future of Australian agriculture:

• Viral disinformation in the food system
• Interconnected digital infrastructure
• Rewiring the grid
• Domesticating the cell
• New geographies of climate change

Of these five forces, viral disinformation was the least well-understood topic by industry. While there was appreciation that viral disinformation could play an important role in the future of food and agriculture, industry stakeholders had little familiarity with what viral disinformation is and how it could be addressed beyond what was presented in the Future Forces report.

In light of this gap, AgriFutures engaged Tenacious Ventures to conduct a deeper dive into disinformation and develop recommendations on how industry could respond to this threat, which resulted in the Understanding Viral Disinformation in Food and Agriculture project.
