Description

West Midlands Group (WMG), is a not for profit organisation that provides research, information and support to its members, who primarily consist of farmers located in the west midlands region. WMG’s mission it to promote and develop economic and environmental sustainable agriculture through research, planning, monitoring and demonstrating best practice.

Current Activities

WMG is involved with all the major GRDC soils projects currently in WA including non-wetting soils, subsoil constraints, soil compaction and lime with DAFWA and CSIRO. There are also some soil research projects funding by COGGO and NACC. The current research projects include:

  • Long term soil fertility lessons for West Midlands sands (NACC)
  • Incorporating lime into sandplain soils (GRDC)
  • Developing and testing innovative methods for incorporating lime into sandplain soils (NACC)
  • Using test strips and sensors to diagnose crop growth limitations (COGGO)
  • Subsoil acidity ameroliation trial (GRDC)
  • Delivering enhanced agronomic strategies for improved crop performance on water repellent soils in Western Australia (GRDC & DAFWA)
  • Testing and demonstrating and innovative method of direct seeding crops and pastures during mould-boarding of non-wetting sandplain (NACC)
  • Controlled traffic, deep ripping and nitrogen availability – a diagnostic, paddock zoning approach (GRDC)

Past Activities and Accomplishments

WMG has become one of the leading grower groups in WA and has a strong presence in cropping, livestock and horticulture. WMG has representation on GRDC western panel, COGGO and the agricultural ministerial advisory committee, the newly appointed WALRC and GGA SAG.

WMG have professional staff including the recent appointment of a vet who has a PhD as well as the establishment of a potato committee which will expand into horticulture over time.

WMG is unique and innovative with its 2 ambassadors: Dr Bill Bowden, WMG Cropping Ambassador and Dr Byron Micke, WMG Livestock Ambassador.
